I know this is an old post, so I apo...Kuffir Garu,<br /><br />I know this is an old post, so I apologize for putting a comment. I think Guha doesn't deserve to be implicated as furthering the idea. He has publicly attacked Amartya Sen for his book "The Argumentative Indian" and denounced the idea of India. In "India After Gandhi," he favourably cites Sir John Strachey, a Britisher, who says that India only exists because of the British (though you would add Brahmins also!).<br /><br />I believe that Guha knows that "India" is constructed like you know "Telugu" is constructed, but like "Telugu," believes that the identity is worthwhile. You obviously disagree. I myself do not like Guha's favouring of Gandhi and his lack of engagement with caste issues.
